Natural gas was the energy source with the highest generator nameplate and net summer capacity in the United States in 2022, amounting to 566 and 502 gigawatts, respectively. Coal recorded the second-largest capacity that year. Meanwhile, wind was the leading renewable source in terms of capacity. In 2022, generator nameplate capacity for wind energy was 141.95 gigawatts and the measured net summer capacity stood at 141.4 gigawatts.
