On Sunday, more than 500 people currently living in the Greek informal refugee camp at Idomeni on the Macedonian border attempted to break through the fence separating them from their further passage to Northern Europe. The Macedonian police fought back, deploying tear gas and rubber bullets. Men, women and children were injured. Witness reports suggested that some of the refugees had been told the border would be opening that morning.
The Director of Campaigns at Amnesty International, Fotis Filippou said of the situation:
"The scenes we are seeing are the expected and unavoidable result of thousands being trapped in Idomeni and elsewhere in Greece - abandoned by Europe - in awful conditions and with little hope of getting protection."
The infographic below attempts to shed some light on the conditions in the Idomeni camp where over 11 thousand people share the use of 128 toilets, none of which are separated for women, and live without running water or hygiene facilities such as showers.
