An analysis of internet connections in 220 countries and territories around the world has revealed the rate at which download speeds have been developing over the past few years.
As detailed in the Cable.co.uk broadband speed league 2023, from 2020 to 2023, the global mean internet download speed almost doubled - from 24.8 Mbps in 2020 to 46.8 in the most recent analysis.
There are however still major differences between world regions. In 2023, Western Europe has the fastest average speed, at 118.7 Mbps - a fair chunk ahead of second-placed North America with 94.0. At the other end of the scale, Northern African and Sub-Saharan Africa have the slowest average speeds, with 9.8 and 12.1 Mbps, respectively.
