The latest indictment to hit former U.S. president and 2024 Republican hopeful Donald Trump was handed down by special counsel Jack Smith yesterday. The new charges are related to Trump's actions and influence in the January 6 Capitol riots. There are four in total, including 'conspiracy to defraud the United States'.
Trump's legal perils have been mounting over the last few months. Using information collected by the Just Security Litigation Tracker, Business Insider and Statista, this infographic shows that there are currently 15 civil and criminal cases ongoing against either him, his organizations or affiliates.
So far this year, two cases have led to a guilty or liable verdict. In May, Trump was found to be liable of sexual abuse and defamation in a civil case brought against him by columnist E. Jean Carroll. The former president was ordered to pay roughly $5m in compensatory and punitive damages. In January, the Trump Organization was sentenced to pay $1.6 million in fines for a tax fraud conviction.
