A surge of cyber attacks has kept Indian authorities on their toes during the last couple of days. More than 40,000 attacks were registered in just five days, according to the Maharashtra state police and NDTV. Cyber attacks and cyber crime have in fact seen a massive increase in India during the last decade. Crime cases resulting from cyber attacks increased almost 30-fold since 2010, despite the fact that few attacks lead to a case.
The attacks this week were coming out of China, police said, implying that a connection to recent border clashes between the two countries could play a role in the timing of the events. The criminals targeted IT infrastructure and the banking sector with phishing attempts and attempts to break into IT protocols, authorities said.
