U.S. Women's National Team Clinches Fourth World Cup
Sport
The U.S. women's national soccer team clinched its fourth FIFA World Cup title on Sunday. Thanks to two second-half goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle, the United States beat the Netherlands 2-0 in Lyon, successfully defending the title from 2015.
With Sunday's win, the U.S. underpinned its dominance over women's soccer. Since the inaugaural 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup in China, the U.S. women never finished worse than third, winning four out of eight tournaments held so far.
In Megan Rapinoe, the U.S. also had the player of the tournament. Having scored six goals over the course of the competition, Rapinoe won the Golden Boot for the best goalscorer as well as the Golden Ball for the best player overall. The 34-year-old from Redding, California, sparked some controversy in recent weeks, as footage of her saying she would not go to the "f...ing White House" in case of a win emerged. In response to Rapinoe's remarks, President Trump tweeted that she should "WIN before she TALKS", which she has now done in the most impressive way possible.
