Children's breakfast cereal with the most sugar (UK)
Health
What did your kids have for breakfast this morning? According to new analysis by UK charity Action on Sugar, if they had cereal, the chances are it was unnecessarily high in sugar. Of the 77 products surveyed that they considered to be appealing to children due to the packaging having cartoons and/or bright colours, only two were considered to be low in sugar - Morrisons Super Smooth Porridge (1 percent sugar) and Sainsbury's Puffed Wheat (0.6 percent).
As our infographic shows, the ranking expands rapidly upwards from there, with the highest sugar content found in Malt O Meal Marshmallow Mateys at 40.2g of sugar per 100g. Action on Sugar is calling for a ban on packaging that may appeal to children for unhealthy cereal products while Public Health England's Sugar Reduction Programme has set manufacturers the target of reducing sugar by 20 percent in certain products by 2020.
