32 percent of smartphones sold in Europe in 2018 were made by Chinese manufacturers, according to market analyst Canalys. This means Chinese smartphone manufacturers can look back on quite the success story, keeping in mind that their market share was only 11 percent in 2013.
The expansion into the European market was also likely accelerated by tensions between China and the United States. The trade war between the two countries made it more beneficial for companies like Huawei or Xiaomi to invest in Europe, Canalys senior analyst Ben Stanton said. Especially Huawei was popular among European consumers, with German buyers making the P20 Lite by the Chinese brand the most purchased smartphone in Germany in Q3 2018.
