Annual visitor numbers for Australia are expected to surpass the ten million mark for the first time this year – no wonder earnings from international tourism are also on the rise in the nation Down Under. According to a survey by the UN World Tourism Organization, international tourists spent approximately US$41.7 billion in the country in 2017, including international flights with national carriers. That makes Australia the 7th biggest earner from international tourism worldwide. In 2018, international tourism spending is expected to have risen even higher. A total of US$42.5 million is currently being estimated by Tourism Australia.
The top spenders amongst the international tourists visiting Australia’s beaches, deserts and jungles are the Chinese. Citizens of the country spent US$11.3 billion in Australia when approximately 1.4 million of them visited last year. U.S. Americans, who are the second largest spenders, trail behind quite significantly with US$3.7 billion spent by approximately 790,000 visitors in 2018. The second largest visitor group by size after the Chinese were actually New Zealand citizens, but 1.3 million Kiwi visitors only spent a meager US$2.6 billion in the past year.
