North Korea
The Countries With Embassies In North Korea
As tensions continue to heighten on the Korean peninsula, U.S. President Donald Trump told Bloomberg he would be "honoured" to sit down and hold talks with Kim Jong-un under the right circumstances. Such a scenario has always been difficult to imagine, given that both nations do not have diplomatic ties. For a time in the 1990s, the U.S. and North Korea engaged in regular dialogue with a view to dismantling the country's nuclear program and that culminated with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright visiting Pyongyang in 2000.
Since then however, relations have not been normalized and the stream of dialogue has evaporated. Today, very few western countries have embassies or consulates in North Korea, though many do maintain non-resident embassies in neighboring countries. In total, 164 countries have established formal diplomatic relations with North Korea but only 25 of them maintain embassies in Pyongyang, including Brazil, Germany, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the UK. North Korea has embassies in 47 countries with several of its ambassadors also accredited to neighboring countries.
