North Korea Has Conducted Its Sixth Nuclear Test

On Sunday, North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test, successfully detonating a hydrogen bomb. It was the most powerful bomb Pyongyang has tested to date, creating a 6.3 magnitude tremor. Most notably, however, the regime has claimed that the device can be loaded into an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Sunday's events have inflamed an already tense situation with US Defense Secretary James Mattis telling reporters that any threat to the United States, its allies or its territories "will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming." South Korea responded to the test by holding live-fire exercises intended to simulate a strike on North Korea's nuclear test site at Punggye-ri.

The following infographic provides an overview of all nuclear tests carried out since 1945. Sunday's test brings North Korea's total to six, a distance ahead of India's three and Pakistan's two. Unsurprisingly, the United States and Russia/USSR are far out ahead in terms of nuclear tests, conducting 1,032 and 715 respectively.
