Who Is Paying For Spotify?

Spotify, the Swedish-based podcast and music streaming platform, released its Q2 earnings for 2024 on Monday. Since its launch 16 years ago, the company has become one of the world’s leading platforms in the field, listened to by some 626 million monthly active users, 246 million of whom (approx. 39 percent) are paying for a premium subscription. The following chart looks more closely at the topic, asking: how does the audio streaming platform’s popularity vary around the world?

Data from Statista’s Consumer Insights macro survey shows that respondents in Mexico as well as Sweden, the latter of which is Spotify’s hometurf, are particularly likely to have paid for Spotify among the polled countries. In the United Kingdom and Spain, just under a third of respondents had used the premium version of the service, while in France, this was significantly lower (18 percent). South Korea stands out for its low uptake of the service, with only 5 percent of respondents having purchased a subscription in the past year. This is partly due to the fact that the country’s respondents opted for homegrown online music services such as Melon and Genie or for YouTube Music.
