The Cities With the Best Public Transport in 2023
Paris has been named the world’s top city for public transit, according to William Russell's Global Transport Index 2023. The city’s transport network is praised not only for being affordable (with the average ticket costing just $2.29), but also for having numerous transport options. The report also cites the ten electric scooter schemes available in the city - something that has changed just this month, following a referendum among Parisians to ban rental scooters, which came into place on September 1.
As the following chart shows, most of the world's top-rated public transportation networks are in Europe. Stockholm comes in second place, followed by Oslo (5th), Brussels (6th), London (7th), Berlin (8th) and Madrid (10th). New York City is the only U.S. city included in the roundup. It scored especially highly for its many metro routes, while also winning points for its high number of bikes available - 25,247 at the time of writing.
It is important to note here that the study analyzed public transportation systems in only 19 major cities around the world, ranking them based on their cost of public transport, size of its fleet, number of metro routes, stops, shared bikes and e-scooter schemes, and the number of electric vehicles per 100,000 people. However, in similar roundups, the cities included in this list such as Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and Hong Kong routinely feature.
