Rising energy costs are by far the biggest challenge for European hoteliers

After the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the accommodation sector is finally showing signs of recovery and beginning to settle into the “new normal”. However, the new normal is not without its own challenges and European hoteliers are clearly feeling the effects of the war in Ukraine, rising energy prices, and overall macroeconomic uncertainty. In fact, in a 2022 survey of European accommodation professionals, the top three challenges faced across Europe were energy, costs, the overall economic situation, and acquiring and retaining staff. Of these challenges, energy cost was clearly top of mind, with a decisive 80 percent of the respondents citing energy costs as a main area of concern for their accommodation business.

The European Accommodation Barometer 2022 presents the findings of a survey of European accommodation industry professionals commissioned by Booking.com and conducted by Statista. Feel free to download the eBook here if you are interested.
