Just Eat just satisfies UK takeaway cravings

Even though the hospitality sector in the UK began recovering from coronavirus-induced lockdowns in spring, consumer spending is still at less than 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels. This is where food delivery services like Just Eat, Deliveroo or Uber Eats are able to shine, as our chart indicates.

67 percent of respondents to the Statista Global Consumer Survey have used Just Eat to satisfy their takeaway cravings over the last year. Coming in second is pizza chain Domino's, with Deliveroo taking third place. Just Eat's biggest direct competitor still operates at a loss, but has improved in the first half of 2021 compared to last year's. The delivery service doubled its order volume to almost 150 million and improved its revenue by 82 percent to 922 million British pounds. However, it still recorded a total loss of 27 million British pounds.

Food delivery services have been increasingly scrutinized by journalists over the last couple of months, with Deliveroo facing criticism over low pay and neglected workers' rights before its IPO in March this year and German delivery company Gorillas experiencing waves of strikes at their Berlin locations this past July.
