Instability Reigns in Syria

In 2013, 85 percent of all fatalities through terrorism, insurgent activities and actions by non-state groups occurred in just five states: Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. These resulted in 2,674 deaths in Syria in 2012. The ongoing conflict in that country has seen that number rise significantly, reaching 4,694 by the end of 2013.

Likewise, escalating violence in Iraq has seen deaths through terrorism and insurgency rise steadily. In 2012, the number of people killed in these actions stood at 2,297 before rising to 3,499 in 2013. In Pakistan, 1,550 people lost their lives through these attacks in 2013 and it rounds off the top three.
