Mercedes' Utter Domination of Formula One

Formula One is loved and loathed in equal measure by motorsport fans. For some, it is the peak of engineering and driving excellence, but others, even past fans, have been turned off by uneventful procession-like racing. Another aspect usually cited by its detractors are the phases of one team or driver dominating the sport, winning most races and walking away with the championship year in, year out. This was true of the Schumacher era, Vettel's imperious few years with Red Bull and now, Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

As this infographic shows, since the Englishman's second season with the Silver Arrows, he and the team have utterly dominated the sport. In 2014, 84.2 percent of all Grand Prix were won by Mercedes alone, as Hamilton raced his way to a second Drivers' Championship. The 2016 season ended up being a two horse race for the title, but it was Hamilton's team mate Nico Rosberg that was taking the other GP wins before eventually winning it in the last race of the year.

Although the other teams picked up their game somewhat in 2017 and 2018, Ferrari and Red Bul giving it their best, Mercedes still topped the podium on more than half of occasions. For anyone hoping the tide was turning, the 2019 has so far seen a titanium-strength rebuttal from the German team, with 8 from 9 after Red Bull and Max Verstappen blemished Mercedes' 100% record this weekend.
