Brexit Party: here today, gone tomorrow?

Nigel Farage's Brexit Party is causing quite a stir in the lead up to the European Parliamentary elections, especially among the Conservatives. Theresa May's party is currently polling 23 points behind the newly formed eurosceptics in the latest poll by Opinium for the Observer. The Brexit Party is in first place, leaving the traditional parties fighting for scraps with the Conservatives in fourth place. Assuming the polls translate into actual results in an election which is being billed as a second referendum on EU membership, can Farage et al. maintain momentum and turn themselves into a genuine political force in the country?

A new poll by YouGov shows that the majority of the public think this is unlikely. When asked if they think a host of parties will still be relevant in ten years time, the Brexit Party was given the worst prognosis, with 63 percent saying its demise is probable. The outlook is perceived to be the same for the already fading UKIP and a majority of 56 percent are pessimistic about the breakaway Change UK party.
