New Yorkers Are Living Longer as Violent Crime Drops

Life expectancy across all five boroughs in New York city is up, placing city residents above the national average. The Bronx, the only borough to trail the national average in life expectancy, is on track to catch up.

According to the most recent data from 2014, a child born in New York today can expect to live to be about 80 years old, putting them on par with life expectancy rates in Sweden.

Life expectancy acts as a measure for overall health and well-being, a claim which is bolstered by the fact that the homicide rate has dropped significantly since the city’s peak in 1990. Poverty and income inequality remain a persistent issue in the city, with some estimating that around 1 in 5 New Yorkers are living below the poverty line.
