Brits Abroad
Where Brits are most likely to be arrested abroad
As the holiday season approaches and Brits start to look forward to their jaunts abroad, for many, sun, sand and alcohol await. In most cases this mix results in a fun and relaxing time away from the stresses of home. According to the most recent figures from gov.uk on consular assistance though, in 5,122 cases in 2015/16 these trips ended in a far less pleasant fashion.
As our infographic shows, UK citizens are most likely to be arrested in Thailand. In the latest period, 194 Brits were arrested or detained in the country - amounting to 45 per 100,000 visits. The image of 'Brits abroad' on the Costa del Sol and similar destinations isn't the best, but despite being the most popular destination (13 million visits), there were only 1,012 arrests/detentions in Spain, making for a per 100,000 figure of 7.8 - the same as the average for all destinations.
