Nintendo Switch Beats Its Predecessors Out of the Gates

The fact that Nintendo has another hit on its hands became apparent when the company announced in December that worldwide Nintendo Switch sales had surpassed 10 million units less than 10 months into its launch. On Thursday the Japanese gaming company made another announcement, revealing that the Switch is in fact its fastest-selling home console ever in the United States.

Having sold more than 4.8 million units in its first 10 months, the Nintendo Switch beat both of its predecessors out of the gates – despite considerable supply constraints in its first few months on the market. The mega-selling Wii sold roughly 4 million units in its first 10 months in the United States and the Wii U disappointed from the start with North American sales amounting to less than 2 million units after 10 months.

While the Wii U struggled with a mediocre lineup of games from the start, Nintendo spoiled its fans with plenty of must-have titles in the Switch’s first year. As the company revealed yesterday, three of its Nintendo Switch titles are owned by more than 50 percent of the consoles owners in the U.S. Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe became instant million-sellers, adding to Nintendo’s library of video game classics.
